Background
Akea Oahu is a Dur Sabon Master in the New Jedi Order. One of only a few survivors of the Jedi Purge, Akea fits his position - In the Old Republic, he was trained as a Jedi historian, and now fills the role well as a living link to the Order's storied past. Although he continues his scholarly pursuits in the time of the New Republic, assisting Tionne with her reconstruction of the Jedi archives and lecturing on Jedi philosophy at the Jedi Academy, he has shifted his focus.
Oahu is the victim of a degenerative, terminal illness of bizarre origin. Although it has weakened him physically, he and other members of the order developed a technique - a variant of Morichiro - that allows him to halt the disease's progression with exertion of his strength in the Force. Though Akea is a notorious ponderer, his meditation has a pragmatic purpose - in the most literal sense, he does it for his health. After realizing he was plagued with such a disease and that it was unlikely to be cured, Oahu understood that it was time to write another page in volumes of history - his own. Akea resolved to rise to meet his own destiny, changing the galaxy for the better as much as he is able before he becomes one with the Force.
In present times, Akea serves as a liaison to outside societies for the Jedi Order. Although the New Republic's influence is vast, there are no small number of oppressed, obscure, and primitive worlds scattered throughout the galaxy's countless star systems. Akea travels to these planets and saves their populations from extinction or self-destruction - for example, he will organize peaceful rebellion against tyrants and gently integrate more advanced agricultural technologies and practices into local farming, that a planet starved for food may still nourish its denizens. When Akea introduces these changes and technologies, he is always careful to do so in a manner that leaves the dignity and cultural values of the population at hand intact - it is only on these conditions that many peoples will allow the Jedi Order to take an active role in their well being. Akea, given his encyclopedic knowledge of traditions and intimate familiarity with moral philosophy, excels at integration of modern advances into traditional or tribal cultures. In more dangerous situations, Akea remains an effective archon - he is renowned as one of the Order's best negotiators and spots diplomatic solutions in even the most volatile of standoffs. For their part, the New Republic supports these outings - most planets who choose to become involved in galactic affairs as a result of the visits of the Jedi Order tend to join the New Republic, though Akea is adamant they not be pressured to do so.
Oahu often surprises others with his mastery of tasks many would consider to be beneath the notice of the galaxy's most stalwart defenders. He is an accomplished poet, sculptor, herbalist, farmer, and chef, among other things. He finds far more wisdom in these simple tasks than in even the most infinite virtual tome of the Republic Archives. It is perhaps because he finds so much harmony in these homely trades that he so enjoys his missions to the less advanced areas of the galaxy.
Akea is a staunch pacifist even among Jedi, and condones violence against nothing less than a Sith or other equally matched, wholly evil opponent - even then, it is a regrettable last-ditch effort. Resorting to violence is a crude and inelegant solution, reserved for those who lack an understanding of themselves and the natural order of things. At the risk of being called a hypocrite (a claim he would not refute in this case), Akea has studied Form III Lightsaber fighting in some considerable depth. He is not so jaded as to think all will share his viewpoints on attrition, and knows that a Jedi's best defense against an irreconcilable opponent is his lightsaber. Although his age and disease have weakened him physically, his technical skill still rests among the higher echelons of the order - he is an effective, if conservative defensive swordsman.
Akea was recently chosen, along with fellow Second Imperium Crisis-veteran Allanar Onsai to arbitrate the negotiations aimed at salvaging the Bastion Accords.
Stories
Space Travel
Master Oahu travels in the Leviathan, a modified DeepWater class Mon Calamari light freighter. The major modifications primarily concern cargo space - most of its 85 metric tons of cargo space have been converted into meditation chambers for Jedi passengers, as well as specialized quarters for Oahu himself. Although fairly small, the quarters do manage to include a pool deep and wide enough for Oahu to stretch comfortably in. The ship also has a considerable store of onboard bacta, primarily in the event of an attack of Oahu's disease, although it has proven useful in a number of other instances as well.
Although Oahu strongly favors diplomatic solutions, he understands that Jedi are often called into dangerous and hostile areas during the course of their work. He has replaced the ship's standard single laser turret with an AG-2G quad laser cannon. He has also had a surface-defense blaster cannon installed, useful in the event of landing and taking off in hostile situations.
The nature of his work as a historian and archaeologist calls for frequent trips to often remote locations, and as such, he was able to convince New Republic mechanics to upgrade the Leviathan's hyperdrive from a Class 2.0 drive to a Class 1.0 drive.
Random Political Notes
This isn't coherent and won't stay here, but I'm not at home and wanted to get my thoughts saved.
As the Jedi order re-emerges, the relationship of the Order to the New Republic government is a hotly debated issue. Some Jedi (including Luke, I believe) feel the order should preserve peace without favoritism, even at the expense of the New Republic, while others feel that the Order is ultimately an instrument of the ruling party.
As he often finds himself, Oahu is opposed to Master Skywalker on the matter; Oahu believes that if the Jedi Order is not subservient to the legitimate leadership, then they have no greater right to interfere with the status quo than the next group of fanatical vigilantes. He feels the Order must have an official capacity within which to operate in order to properly maintain peace. That said, Oahu believes the Jedi Order is willing and obligated to offer its opinion on all judiciary matters with the New Republic government, and, perhaps to the frustration of some senators, Oahu expects the word of the Jedi to be taken with considerable weight. He also considers 'legitimate leadership' to be a key word in the above belief system - the Jedi Order should only serve a government it feels is, on the whole, morally righteous, but if such a government is in place, it should be the final arbiter of Jedi Order activity on a galactic scale (again, with Oahu's caveat that a Jedi's advice to the government should be taken very seriously).
