Background

Vu Lumi was born to an Umbaran family of darkside Force users. Her mother, Mae Lumi, was a semi-notorious priestess who led a cult on Umbara. Although Vu's mother aspired to train her Force-sensitive daughter as an heir, Mae was killed when Vu was relatively young, slain by a Jedi sent to investigate concerning developments in Umbaran politics related to Mae's cult. Meanwhile, a separate member of the same Jedi contingent had "liberated" Vu from the cult's hideout, unaware that Vu was Mae's daughter. By the time the Jedi realized the connection, Vu was in their custody. Although they considered her lineage problematic, the Jedi were ultimately unwilling to risk the cult raising Vu to follow in her mother's footsteps. Reluctantly, they took Vu with them to the Jedi temple, where she joined a group of younglings effectively being raised by the Order. Vu eventually became a Padawan learner assigned to the mentorship of celebrated negotiator Lam Nkai. Although they frequently disagree, Vu begrudgingly respects her teacher's diplomatic talent and his ability to engage with her occasionally-unorthodox perspectives.

Appearance

Vu is an Umbaran woman with a small frame and athletic build. Like many members of her species, she has white irises and pale, nearly white skin with a slight blue tint. She ascribes to the Umbaran custom of shaving her head, although she has considered letting her hair grow out to avoid being mistaken for her mother. She is almost always wearing worn, oversized Jedi robes that roughly resemble the shadow cloaks traditionally worn by Umbarans. She dislikes bright light and frequently keeps the hood of her robes raised. Vu wears an artificial Padawan braid made from Silka beads around her head. She bears a stylized circular scar on her right shoulder blade, the result of a brand forced on her by her mother's cult. As the logo is known (at least to those in the region) to be associated with her mother's cult, Vu generally keeps it covered.

Beliefs

Vu is intrigued and slightly disturbed by moral objectivity implied by the Force. Force users walking the path of the dark side manifest their corruption in the most literal ways, with their bodies physically decaying from the stresses of channeling the dark side of the Force. While the effects are obvious, Vu is troubled by the idea that the Force somehow "decides" what is good, and what is bad. She meditates on questions like these:

  • Would someone in a cave angrily spewing Force lightning at a rock eventually grow pale and atrophied, just the same as if they'd been casting the lightning at innocent bystanders?
  • If someone channels righteous anger to defend the weak, and they are sincere in their intentions, have they slipped closer to the dark side anyway?
  • Does a Jedi healing the sick to attain personal fame risk falling to the dark side?
  • How do the scales of the Force weigh intention and outcome? Does the true measure of right and wrong exist internally, or externally? Is "right" and "wrong" the same for everyone?

Vu's ascetism arises partly from her desire to better understand the idea of a "self" in relation to the Force. She believes material possessions and attachments serve to muddy the waters, tethering the "internal" self to the "external" world and making it difficult to truly introspect on the motivation behind one's own actions. Vu remains enamored with apocryphal advice passed down from the Jedi ascetics of antiquity: "To become one with the Force is to become nobody."

Her path to enlightenment is defined by her focus on the morality of actions - Vu believes the light side of the Force is better understood through deliberate, compassionate action than the study of ancient tomes. Vu's desire to embody the Force in an active way separates her from the Jedi hermits of eld; while she disavows material possession and personal gain, she can frequently be found at the center of any community in need, providing what help she can. Her distaste for academic study is a matter of consternation to her elders, who feel that her focus on deeds and actions detrimentally, and ironically, grounds her in the material world in a way that will eventually be an impediment to further growth as a Jedi.

Her master's viewpoints have certainly influenced her own. Vu does not believe that the Jedi Order's interpretation of the Force is objectively correct, only the least dangerous and most conducive to harmony. She does not believe the Jedi order to be infallible and has mixed feelings about her own past. The Jedi killed her mother, forcibly took Vu into custody, and effectively pressed her into service for the Jedi. On balance, Vu ultimately does not fault the Jedi for killing her mother. Vu believes her mother was a monster who brought great harm to a great many people and proudly opposes that legacy. Nevertheless, in moments of doubt, Vu cannot help but wonder if her conception of her mother is one that was given to her by the Jedi, their repeated criticisms eventually supplanting Vu's own scarce memories of her youngest years.

Powers & Abilities

As an Ascetic and skeptic, Vu prizes self-sufficiency and strives to be well-rounded, training in most of the abilities necessary for a Jedi to succeed on the frontier. Against that backdrop, Vu's deep meditations on the connection between mind and soul have given her a particular aptitude for telepathic Force abilities. In addition to being able to read and influence the thoughts of those around her, Vu is also able to exert control over their mental/emotional energy levels. Vu uses this power to gain an advantage in combat by manipulating the strain experienced by friend and foe alike.

Although Vu avoids combat when possible, she is a skilled Niman disciple and bolsters her relatively simple bladework with tightly-integrated Force usage. The style suits her pragmatic, defensive approach to combat, allowing her additional time to drive a peaceful resolution to a situation.
