Prellon Annix
Physical Description
Like most Woostoids, Prellon Annix is taller than most humans, standing 2 meters tall. He has a wiry frame; his joints are rigid and bony, covered by a wrinkled, aging skin. Woostoids are known for having longer lifespans than humans, but at age 82, even Prellon calls himself old. Woostoids are not known for their strength or athleticism, but compared to others of his species and his age, he is in good physical condition. His large, black eyes are typical of the Woostoid species. Short, thinning reddish-gray hair sits atop his head and looks as if it has not been brushed in several years in stereotypical professor fashion.
Background
Early Years
Prellon did not have a homeworld in the traditional sense. He was born on a space station in the Corporate Sector in 68 BBY. He was an only child, as his parents were too involved in their work to care for more. They both worked in the same division of the Republic's bureaucracy, a division that oversaw the mining and industrial operations of the Corporate Sector worlds. The nearest planet to their station was Bonadan, but Prellon would never refer to it as his homeworld.
His parents would alternate between the deep space station and Bonadan itself, working at each for about 6 months at a time. Being a Woostoid family with an affinity for education, his parents decided to home-school their child. The education services available in the Tingel Arm of the galaxy were vastly inferior to the knowledge they could teach their child with material from the HoloNet. He led a very sheltered childhood until about the age of ten, when his parents position within the Republic shifted and they were sent back to Woostri.
During his teen years, he was raised on a small island off the coast of Woostri's urban continent. He had access to a galaxy-class education and became an avid researcher in the field of galactic history. The subject simply fascinated him, and his favorite childhood trips were the ones to Woostri's HoloScan database, a vast archive of information on his homeworld.
The populace of Woostri was fairly intelligent, and compared to his graduating class he did not particularly stand out. But every history teacher in his community knew of him and his passion for the subject. His overall grades did not reflect his intelligence because he neglected other subjects in his pursuit of history.
His dream was to attend the most prestigious university on Woostri, and one of the most prestigious in the galaxy. His parents made a modest income as analysts in the Republic but even that was not enough to fulfill Prellon's dream. Prellon took on a few jobs after leaving public schooling. He became a freighter pilot and worked tirelessly sending import and export shipments to and from Woostri. This gave him good experience traveling the galaxy, and during this time he developed a second passion: flying.
Finally, through tireless work and a whole lot of determination, Prellon was able to save enough credits to go to the university. His second passion would have to take a sideline for his first: learning.
Academia on Woostri
Prellon became a phenomenal student in the history department of the university. He built long lasting friendships with his fellow students and professors, friendships that would pay great dividends down the road. At one point midway through his academic career, he ran out of money and would have been forced to pick up another job as a freighter pilot. However, his professors liked him so much that they found some grants and scholarships that allowed him to continue his academic quest.
As a senior student, he became an assistant to a few professors and even taught a few lectures on his own. It was clear that this was what he wanted to do with his life, and he became a professor at the university after completing his education there in 38 BBY.
His career at the university was a long one. When Finis Valorum was elected Supreme Chancellor of the Republic, Professor Annix was teaching. When Anakin Skywalker was living with his mother on Tatooine and Padme Amidala became Princess of Theed, Professor Annix was teaching. When the Clone Wars broke out and people like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian were just being born - Professor Annix was teaching.
The Galactic Empire is Born
During the Clone Wars and the transition from the Galactic Republic to the Galactic Empire, Woostri managed to stay out of the fray. They quickly took sides with Palpatine and the Galactic Empire due to their natural affinity to order. Prellon realized that he was living through a historic era of galactic history. While this excited him as a professor, he became increasingly uneasy as Imperial policies began to play out. Gone were the freedoms that academia had in the Old Republic. Universities across the galaxy, including those on Woostri, were imperialized. They were encouraged -- rather, forced -- to promote Imperial policies and viewpoints and to portray Jedi and the force as evil. The Empire even opened up a military academy on Woostri.
Somewhat interested in this new field of modern military tactics, Prellon began to split his research time between galactic history and modern warfare. He began teaching at the Imperial Academy on Woostri a few years after it opened. It was during this time that the Empire had begun to bring back slavery, repealing many of the Old Republic's anti-slavery laws. Xenophobia was spreading across the Empire, and he noticed this in his history classes. He didn't start to get passionate about it until he began teaching at the military academy, where his class consisted entirely of human males.
His colleagues in academia agreed that xenophobia was a major problem that was threatening many species in the galaxy, but they all felt powerless to prevent it. Prellon noticed his classroom composition dwindle from a highly diverse set of species to primarily human and humanoids. Many of his star students began disappearing, the Mon Calamari, Quarren, Sullustan, and Ithorians to name a few.
Professor Annix became an outspoken critic of xenophobia. He began injecting the topic into his lecutres on modern history. As the years progressed, more and more of his students began supporting xenophobic culture and he found himself hosting discussion and debate on the minority side of the argument. This frustrated him wholeheartedly to the point where he began to lash out at his students for holding such views. Taking this hardline stance against xenophobia was bold to say the least, but Prellon would have no more of it. He had to stand up for what he believed to be one of the biggest cultural crimes in the galaxy.
A year after the Battle of Yavin, Professor Prellon Annix would give a lecture that would change his life forever.
Annix's Defining Moment
"Did you hear about Annix's lecture tonight?" whispered a young human male to his friend in a park on the univeristy campus.
"Yes. Is he insane?" came the response. The friend shifted uncomfortably in his seat on the bench. "I've just got a bad feeling about it."
"I know," the first man looked out toward the streams of people walking between buildings on campus. "I'm going. I want to hear what he has to say. He's right, you know..." his voice trailed off as his friend scowled.
"I don't know about that," the friend responded, somewhat cynically, as if he wanted to believe that was true but knew the tides of xenophobia were way too strong to abolish at this point. "Let me know how it is."
---
Professor Prellon Annix stood at the center of the stage as students began pouring into the lecture hall. He chose one of the largest halls on campus to host this lecture. He didn't reserve the hall, nor did he tell many of his colleagues he was doing this. But some of them found out anyway. They recommended he not do it, but Prellon furiously responded that it had to be done. It was the right thing to do. There was too much on the line to let xenophobia and slavery take hold as the cultural norm of the galaxy.
He had no podium, no notes, and no visual aides. He was giving this lecture from the heart.
Annix began, "I've been teaching at this university for 39 years. I've seen entire generations of students come and go, some returning for higher education and some moving on and doing great things with their educations. You too, will one day graduate from this fine institution and use the knowledge you have acquired here to achieve great things for the galaxy. I'm looking at the next generation of bankers, corporate executives, engineers, and government officials. Perhaps I am even looking at the next great Admirals and Generals in the Galactic Empire."
He paused for a moment, letting the audience realize their own significance. His voice grew more passionate and more firm as he continued speaking. "But I've got a lesson for you. A lesson that can't be taught in history class or in a tactical training session at the academy. It's a lesson of morality, a lesson your parents may have taught you when you were young. But times have changed, governments have changed. My colleagues warned me not to say this, not to make a big fuss..."
"My classes used to be full of sentient beings from all across the galaxy. Sullustans, Ithorians, Faraguls, Devaronians, Twi'leks, Bith... the list goes on and on. How many of them do you see here today? How many?"
The crowd murmured and looked around. There was not one among them. "Why is that? What makes them different from me, different from you, such that they are not entitled to an education at this institution? Surely it's not the hair of a Bothan or large eyes like mine... is it?"
"The Empire has abolished the Senate and over the years repealed many of the anti-slavery laws the Republic had in place. This is an outrage." He pointed angrily at the ceiling as he emphasized the word outrage. "I turn to you, the next generation of leaders in this galaxy, to do something about it. You will find yourselves in positions in the future with decisions to make. Do not discriminate against your fellow citizens of the galaxy. Slavery has no place in our society. The Empire has no right to employ this abuse on entire populations of worthy beings."
"Some of you might be old enough to remember the glory of the Old Republic, when such fear of non-humanoids was reserved for only the most backwater worlds. Today, that fear has become a phenomenon. Entire populations have been driven from Coruscant back to their homeworlds. Entire civilizations have been forced into slavery for the benefit of the Empire. This cannot stand. This will not stand."
"I had many star students who have seen their lives ruined by the Empire. Akadia, a Mon Calamari scholar of galactic history specializing in the Great Hyperspace War, is now doing construction work on her home planet for no pay. Her brothers and sisters have been sold off to other worlds to work on large military projects. Their lives have been decimated. She was a phenomenal student, reminded me much of myself in my early studies."
He recounted three other stories of past students before he was interrupted. Three stormtroopers entered the room, startling the audience. Some of them started to leave, others stayed in their seats. The volume of the room rose, but Prellon Annix did not skip a beat. "My friends, future leaders, I urge you to do what you know is right in your future endeavors. You may not have the power right now"--the stormtroopers walked up on-stage, heading straight for the professor--"but you will."
The stormtroopers pushed forward toward the professor, but Prellon saw over the stormtrooper's shoulder as a few students got up from their seats and charged the stage. "No!" Prellon shouted. Time slowed and Prellon's world came crashing down. He had no problem jeopardizing his life and his career, but not that of his students. He didn't want them to suffer the same fate as he, not here and not now. But he had no control. Three students, two humans and a fellow Woostoid, began furiously beating the stormtroopers. Their blows were harmless against the stormtrooper armor. One of the stormtroopers was taken to the ground, but the other two managed to keep their balance and raise their blasters. In a quick flash of blue, Prellon felt his nervous system freeze. The thinned out audience watched in horror as their beloved professor hit the ground unconscious.
And with that, Prellon Annix's career came to an abrupt end. He was charged with several conspiracy counts and quickly tossed in a prison on Woostri. The students who rushed to his defense met equally harsh punishment. It would take 3 years and a Battle on Endor before Annix would be free again.
The New Republic War College
After the Battle of Endor and the dissipation of the Galactic Empire, Annix was freed from his imprisonment and his record was expunged. After Woostri joined the New Republic, Annix was offered a position at the newly established New Republic War College that had taken the place of the old Imperial academy he used to teach at. He continued his career as a senior strategist for the New Republic military, using his broad knowledge of conflict past and present to teach new recruits for the Republic. After doing this for about 5 years, he became inspired to join the ranks of the NEw Republic military himself for a multitude of reasons.
He kept in close contact with some of his finest students. They would send him stories of their adventures and accomplishments. Each story gave Prellon overwhelming excitement, knowing that his lessons and teachings were making a difference in the galaxy. He too, wanted to make a difference first-hand. He took up piloting once again, reminiscing of his youthful days as a freighter pilot delivering imports and exports. He became a student at the very academy he taught at and completed his training as a starfighter pilot for the New Republic Fighter Corps.
He carried with him a valuable wealth of knowledge of galactic history, military tactics, and steadfast principles. He was ecstatic to begin this new chapter of his life.
Personality
Prellon Annix has been described by many of his students as one of the most passionate lecturers they had ever known. His two favorite things in life are to learn and teach. Even at age 82, he has never stopped absorbing new information on galactic history. There is simply too much knowledge out there for one to learn in a lifetime; fortunately for him, his lifespan is a little longer than most.
His lecture style has been described as one that "teaches from the heart," an account that has been repeated by many students and faculty that have witnessed his lectures. His oratorical skills are impressive and finely tuned to deliver information to large audiences. He gets so engrossed in the stories that he tells that even the most uninterested students can't help but pay attention.
Prellon takes great pride in his work and loves helping his students in their studies. In his many years teaching he has learned a great deal on the most effective ways to help students learn. Students from all over the galaxy come to Woostri to study, and Prellon has learned to work with students of many unique species and cultures. He holds no bias against any sentient being regardless of their race.
His personality isn't entirely dominated by his fascination with the galaxy and its history. When logic and order are not present in any situation he is in, a frustration develops that is difficult to shake. This is common among Woostoids and Prellon's time as a historian has given this problem additional dimension. Galactic history is filled with disorder and chaos, which forces Prellon to find hints of logic when they may not exist.
Overall, Prellon Annix is intelligent and pragmatic. He prefers to think about situations like a game of holochess where he has time to study the board and make his move. He's a teacher and a student, a believer in the common good, and an intellectual who feels that knowledge is power.
Motivation & Objectives
Prellon's motivation for joining the New Republic Fighter Corps comes from two separate desires: wanting to be a part of history and fulfilling his life long dream to fly.
