Baric Valaras

Background

Baric Valaras was born in the Duros system, though he never once visited the system's namesake planet in childhood. Like most members of his species Baric was born and raised in one of the Space Cities orbiting the planet Duro. As a citizen of Jyvus Space City, one of the largest cities orbiting Duro, Baric was raised in a safe and civilized environment one would expect of living among The Core Worlds. However, when the Confederacy of Independent Systems launched Operation Durge's Lance, an attack of The Core Worlds of The Republic in an attempt to swing the tide of The Clones Wars in their favor, Baric's life was drastically changed.

Baric was only four years old during The First Battle of Duros, when General Grievous lead the assault on his homeworld and city. Grievous struck quickly, targeting Jyvus Space City as the focus of his initial assault which was forced to surrender to the Confederate Navy after the system's outer defenses were defeated and divisions of battle droids invaded the city. Chief Representative Officer of Jyvus, Hoolidan Keggle, fled the city during the initial assault and escaped capture, leaving the remaining Councilmen of Jyvus as Grievous' primary targets aboard the city. Daxar Valaras, Baric's father, was one of the nine who sat on the Council of Jyvus and knew that not only would he be in grave danger, but so too would his family. Daxar was able to negotiate safe passage for his only child, Baric, off of Jyvus City and out of the Duros system altogether thanks to long time family friend Remmy Saretti. As a human, and known trader throughout the region, Remmy was's cargo was seized with minimal scrutiny as a price for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, however one his cargo was turned over to the Confederate Navy he was free to go. Playing the part of smuggler, Remmy left the Duros System with a four year old Duro refugee before the Confederates were able to drop the planetary shields and begin planetary bombardment.

Once planetary bombardment began the battle lasted less than another week, eventually Hoolidan Keggle emerged from hiding and signed General Grievous's capitulation to the Separatists to put an end to the fighting. However, the worst of the damage had already been done, the orbital bombardment of the surface caused radioactive fallout to turn Duro into an uninhabitable wasteland.

Far away from the destruction of his planet and eventual death of his parents, along with many of his fellow Duro, Baric was being raised by a nomadic human trader with no home other than his ship and the port he happened to be trading in at any given time. Remmy Saretti was a respected trader, but had yet to make a name for himself in the business and certainly did not have the wealth and resources he would have later in life when his lone-ship operation had expanded to what could legitimately be called a trade empire. Remmy did what he could in regards to giving Baric a place to grow up, but traveling up and down the Corellian Trade Spine from The Core to The Outer Rim was hardly the normal, civilized life he would have had if not for the invasion of his home. The life suited Baric well enough and only helped to further his natural wanderlust, though he visited Corellia as often as any other system there was no doubt that the Greater Javin Sector was what he considered his homebase. When not aboard Remmy's ship it was in these systems that he stayed with friends or acquaintances of the trader. Whether it was diverse terrestrial capital of Javin, the bustling spaceport of Gerrenthum, or the familiar floating cities of Bespin, Baric's new home was The Outer Rim.

When he finally reached adulthood he was lucky enough to have choices, Remmy had offered to make him captain of a trading freighter among his fleet where he could inherit the trade empire his adopted father had built. However a trade operation along a major space highway lacked the adventurous flare that Baric's heart desired. Instead he took another opportunity. After the Clone Wars Duro got back on it's feet quickly, though the surface of the planet is still uninhabitable, and it's orbital shipyards and spaceports were among the Galaxies finest. Instead of inheriting a ship that might lead to a trade fleet, Baric went into financial and cultural debt by taking out a loan to buy a ship under the Duros Lending Tradition. The Firespray he purchased was a far cry from a trading vessel, but was fast, maneuverable, and reliable enough to explore the galaxy well beyond established trade routes.

Obligations

  • Debt: Baric purchased his ship according to the Duros Lending Tradition from the Orbital Shipyards of Duro. This strict lending system gave him a loan to buy the spaceship but carries a severe social stigma if he does not maintain his payments. (9)
    • Baric made a 8,000 credit payment after Episode VI.
    • Baric made a 16,000 credit payment after Episode VII.
    • Baric made a 24,000 credit payment after Episode X.
  • Favor: When Baric was a child Duro came under attack by the separatists, led by General Grievous. The orbital city that Baric's parents were among the leaders was taken over by the separatist troops, and Baric had to escape to avoid capture and possibly death. His parents arranged for him to be smuggled out of the system by a familiar trader, Remmy Saretti, who then help to raise and take care of him into adulthood. (13)
    • Baric, with the help of the crew of Kraken's Kiss, paid off a significant portion of this debt by agreeing to run Imperial Blockade to deliver medical supplies to a friend of Remmy on the planet Derra IV. (Episode III: Revenge of the Nav)
