Background

Chapter One - Home life

Fay was born to the king and queen of one of the hundred kingdoms. Her father was a fire aspected exalt, and her mother was from a line with a number of known exalts. When Fay was born, she became the heir to the throne as the oldest child. A few years later, her mother became pregnant again. While giving birth to her brother, Fay’s mother died. Fay was given her mother's beautiful sewing kit to remember her by. As the months went by her father became withdrawn from his home life. To make matters worse, Fay's new bother became heir to the throne as the oldest boy.

When the got older Fay and her brother began a formal education. For the most part, Fay did not enjoy her schooling. She did, however, discover a knack for language and loved to dance. As they got older, her brother started to pick on her ruthlessly. It started only verbally, but eventually, he began to hit her. Fay was always on the small side, and her brother quickly became bigger and stronger than her, even though he was younger. It wasn’t long before he was sexually abusing her as well. She tried to tell her father, but he didn’t understand what she was trying to tell him. He told her brother to play nice and not pick on her.

The abuse went on for years. At 13, Fay exalted into a water-aspect terrestrial exalt. A ceremony was held, and Fay was declared the new heir as the oldest exalted child. When her brother tried to abuse her again, she easily stopped him with her new found power and confidence. Her brother tried to avoid her, and she tried to ignore that he existed. Her schooling was extended to include training in her new powers. Her happiness only lasted a few years, however. Four years after her own exaltation, her brother exalted as a fire-aspected exalt. Another ceremony was held and her brother was declared the heir to the throne as the oldest male exalt. Fay felt betrayed by her father even though he was just following tradition. Her confidence and will were broken.

It isn’t long before her brother beat her half to death and raped her. Afterwards, her mind was broken, and she was never the same. She spent most of her time alone traveling the area controlled by her family. When she did interact with people, she was very manipulative and failed to make personal connections. While exploring her family’s lands on one of her trips, she found a manse deep under a large lake. The manse was formed from the seaweed native to the area and had a wood aspect. Using her anima power, she attuned to the manse and took the hearthstone. She told her history teacher and asked if he knew anything. He told her a story about how her ancient ancestors were water aspected before a line of fire aspected dragon bloods moved into the area and watered down the original family’s blood. There was a legend of a manse deep underwater, but there have been no water aspected dragon bloods that could verify. She must have found the rumored manse.

She showed her father the treasure. Her father was excited and gave her a hearthstone amulet to wear it in. She claims that as the oldest and a water aspect, like their ancestors, she should have the throne. Her father denied her and, as a fire aspect himself, he claims that the legend of a water-aspected heritage is nothing but a rumor. Depressed, she retreated back to her seclusion. During her deceased mother’s birthday celebration, Fay introduced her dancing to the people with a big performance. She was given much applause and praise. Afterwards, her father introduced her to a man he had decided will be her husband. She was shocked and didn’t respond. He introduced himself and said how much he loved her performance. Seeing that she was told nothing about this before hand, he excused himself and asked if they can have dinner tonight. She nodded, still in shock. Her father explained that his family has a treaty with the spiders that make the silk used for silk armor. They were very rich and a treaty between the two families will be very helpful. They were hoping to add exalted blood to their family. Fay again felt betrayed by her father. How could he just sell her?

Still in a daze, she went to the dinner with her fiancé. He seemed kind and intelligent. He gave her a gift of silk armor. It had been cut into one long continuous strip of silk. He explained that, depending on how you wrap it around yourself, it could hide beneath almost any outfit. They had a long dinner, and she even thought she could learn to love him. She decided, however, that her fate should be her own and that she could not marry him. She decided that she was going to inform her father tomorrow.

Her father simply refused to listen to her feelings and said that it was already decided. Feeling that she had no other option left, she decided to run away. She retreated to her room to begin preparations. She wrote a letter to her fiancé informing him that, even though they had a connection, she would not be his wife. She was going to find her own destiny and would not be a piece of meat to be sold and traded by men. Then, she gathered what belongings she could carry, took a large amount of silver, and set off. She gave the letter to a servant to give to him when he awoke and left for the stables. She took her favorite horse and went east towards the Sandy River.

Chapter Two - Wanderer

Fay traveled east to the Sandy River, where she bought passage on a ferry for herself and her horse. She spent a few days in a nice inn on the river’s edge. It was summer and she enjoyed the beach and the water, but it wasn’t long before she grew bored and worried that someone would find her there. So she traveled further east by horse back. She would stop in a town for a few days, drink and party, and move on. Eventually, she started selling her possessions because they were hard to carry and even her horse because it was easier to take a carriage than find a stable and care for a horse.

The weeks slipped by in a drunken haze and before she knew it, she was broke. She slipped away from her latest tab and on foot, made her way to the nearest big city, Nechara. She quickly discovered she could make a few silvers a day dancing at inns or with street performers, but it wasn’t enough for her lifestyle. She considered prostitution, but could not convince herself to be a man’s piece of meat again. In an act of desperation, she picked the pocket of a very drunk man at an inn she was dancing at. No one noticed. Soon she was pick-pocketing at all her performances. On the few occasions that someone came back and confronted her, she managed to play innocent. Her lifestyle improved drastically, and she began to be content.

Then, one night while walking alone from one bar to the next, something struck the back of her head and sent her sprawling. Before she knew what happened, she was surrounded by men that were kicking and beating her. All she could do was curl up and try to hide her head until they beat her unconscious. When she woke up, she was in some kind of cell. There was no window, no light. She found the door and banged on it and yelled. No response. After hours of waiting, she heard boots in the hallway. The door opened and the light blinded her. She had been taken by the Thieves Guild because she had not paid her dues. She was dragged before the boss, who would judge her. The boss looked her over for a few minutes and scratched his chin. He decided to let her live and that she would work for him. Fay proved to be an excellent pickpocket and was invited to join the boss’s posse. They slept together on occasion and a relationship began to form. She enjoyed a special place of privilege in the organization as a big money earner and the boss’s girl.

Chapter 3 - Assassin

One night, while walking alone, Fay was attacked by a masked man. He came up from behind her, but Fay heard his footsteps. She moved to the side just has his knife moved through the area she had been standing moments before. With the grace of a dancer, she swept his legs out from under him with a swift kick. The man landed on his back and had the wind knocked out of him. He was no professional. Fay grabbed the knife the man had dropped and climbed on top of him. She slammed the blade between his ribs with both hands. The man screamed, but her rage was not quenched. She wrapped her hands around his throat and watched the life drain from his eyes. She stood up and wiped the sweat from her brow. She couldn’t stop grinning as she ran home.

Fay couldn’t get the picture of the man dying in her hands out of her head. She had never felt more powerful. Every time she thought of it she become excited and practically danced wherever she went. Thinking she had found another man, her boss demanded to know what had got into her. She excitedly told him all the gory details. He became furious, furious at her for not telling him and furious that one of his rivals had tried to off one of his people. Before he could even catch his breath, Fay had an idea. She wanted to become an enforcer. The boss almost hit her when she said it. After refusing her idea, he stormed off to find his right hand man.

Fay overheard one of her boss’s spies suggest that one of the young new crime lords had hired the hit. The young ones were always low on cash and rich in guts. It made sense that one of them would hire a piss poor assassin to take out the girl of the toughest crime boss in town in order to try and make a name for themself. Fay decided that she would get her, and her boss’s, revenge. She found out that her target was going to be at a private party, and she put on some heavy make-up and a dress that would make his men never gaze up at her face. Fay arrived at the party as it was winding down. The band was still playing, but most of the guests were on the sleepy side of drunk and the candles were sputtering and going out. No one noticed another pretty girl among the guests. No one questioned it when the girl dragged the barely conscious Boss to a secluded location. The (very) few sober guards only chuckled when they heard strange sounds coming from the closet. Fay slipped out a window with the man’s head when she was done. She easily slipped through the dark alleys in the still morning hours. She burst into her boss’s room and (ignoring the girl in his bed) held her victim’s head triumphantly. When no proof surfaced that his organization was involved in the hit, he was forced to accept her as his assassin.

After a few test runs, it became clear that Fay had a real knack for murder. She quickly eliminated some of the weaker bosses and weakened the power base of the stronger bosses. Her boss became the most feared and powerful boss in the city. Unfortunately, his remaining rivals locked themselves down and avoided his organizations except for violent street battles. The battles began to draw the attention of the authorities, and with the other boss’s paranoia, assassination was impossible. Fay’s boss bough her an artifact called a mask that allowed her to change her appearance significantly. Taking the appearance of trusted guards and known merchants paying tribute, Fay finished the war. The remaining boss’s proclaimed their loyalty to her boss. The authorities, angry about the gang wars, did not let up on their investigations. Fay’s attention was turned to the city leaders and public at large and soon, everyone had heard of the Black Widow. With her boss running all the crime in the city, and practically running the city itself, they brought in huge profits, and she became rich. She bought herself elegant dresses and beautiful jewelry including an artifact necklace called a collar of dawn’s cleansing light. Life settled down and soon she was going to far more parties and balls than hits.

How I Became A Grass Spider

Fay took the bowl from Zealot. "Princess?" she asked raising an eyebrow. She smirked to herself as she picked herself a pinch of the therapeutic plant. She took her time, and a few puffs, before continuing.

“I found myself in a little city off the Maruto River named Nechara and in the employ of a crime lord there. I use employ loosely of course; our exact relationship was a matter of disagreement. In any event, he quickly discovered my lust for blood and my ability to get into the best parties. The first time I killed for him was for a measly sum of jade, but I saw how much he made from the disappearance of his biggest competitor.” She closed her eyes and grinned to herself remembering some secret detail of her story.

“In any event, it wasn’t long before he was almost running the city, and I was a full partner. Even though we were running a criminal organization, my work had never been contracted out. The only reason his organization was expected was because he had been spared so far. Because of my disguises, I wasn’t even on anyone’s radar.”

“Then the woman missing an arm appeared. I later found out it was Aleni. She approached us and offered my companion a very large sum of money if his assassin would kill an enemy of hers. She gave us the details and a large down payment and left. Later when we were alone that night, we argued and fought over whether or not to take the contract. He made the mistake of saying that I was ‘his,’ and that ended it. The knife was in his neck before he knew what he said.”

When fey mentions the kill her eyes glaze over like an old woman remembering the best times of her youth. It is quickly clear that she lives for the thrill of a kill.

“I went off that night to complete my job even though I wasn’t sure I would meet up with the one armed woman now that my partner was dead. The exact details are long, and I must admit a bit embarrassing, so I will save them for another time. Afterwords I found out that my mark was Ryn, and the hit was a recruitment exercise. They saw enough potential in me to bring me here, where I began my training and worked as an associate for some time. I worked with The One-Eyed Queen primarily until just recently when I was appointed to this group.”

She sighed at the completion of the story and placed the bowl back on the table. She jerked her head towards Fenrir, “What’s that mutt’s story? He’s no regular dog….”

What She's Been Up To

Where as some of the members of her group have spent increasing amounts of time away from the Grass Spiders proper, Fay has taken a large number of contracts and has become closer with a number of members, particularly The One-Eyed Queen of Silk and Lace. The majority of Fay's targets have required navigating delicate social situations, and as a result, Fay's natural social abilities have increased. In one missions that occured in a Wyld pocket, Fay's spider tattoo came to live and bit her. Upon returning to the range homes, Rizuka discovered that the poison from the bite was spreading Wyld taint and would eventually change Fay into a creature of the Wyld. Rizuka did her best to treat the poison, but it was beyond even her considerable skills. Fay was put into an induced coma and taken to the Grass Spider Manse. There, in some secret chamber, Samsara, the Penitent Lotus, sealed the Wyld Taint into the tattoo with Fay's essence. When Fay awoke she discovered that her tattoo was alive with the power of the Wyld and that it was under the control of her essence. Rizuka explained that Samsara had taken her below the manse and saved her, but Rizuka was just as clueless about how as Fay was.

Fallback Move: Black Widow

Should the mark be male, or possibly the right female, Fay will seduce him and, after exhausting him, strangle him to death.
