BACKGROUND

Born on the Defel home world of Af'El, a distant and secluded outer rim planet, like most of his species Cerberus began working in the Meleenium mines at a young age. The Defel species lived underground to escape the harsh conditions of their planet, deeper into the planet's depths were the only naturally occurring meleenium stock piles in the galaxy, which was a necessary mineral used in Durasteel construction. The Defel had never developed hyperspace capability, which meant they were incapable of trading this incredibly valuable resource without a visit from outsiders. As a result the corporation Vulca Minerals made a yearly trip to Af'El, procuring a yearly supply of the valuable resource in exchange for fresh foodstuffs. Occasionally, ambitious independent traders would brave the high-gravity planet to trade with The Defel and break Vulca Minderal's meleenium monopoly.

In 6 BBY, one such ship arrived on Af'El to trade meleenium, as successful, arrogant smugglers who were primarily under the employee of Black Sun Crime Syndicate and looked down upon the Defel during their interactions. Not only did they take advantage of The Defel, but they fancied the smaller creatures pets more than peers. The captain of the vessel was vain beyond measure, and decided to take not only their minerals, but one of the adolescent Defel who worked in the refinery. Cerberus was kidnapped at a young age, taken to be a pet aboard the smuggler's vessel.

Aboard the smuggling vessel, the captain quickly grew bored of his new pet, as he lost interest he grew cruel and abusive. The rest of the crew was no help, though most lacked the same cruelty as the captain, they were mostly amused or at best apathetic. Cerberus learned over time to remain out of sight and mind, his natural curiosity and mechanical aptitude kept him entertained in the bowels of he ship, where the captain rarely visited. The narrow, warm ducts and chutes in the mechanical shafts of the ship reminded Cerberus of the underground tunnels of Af'El and he made a secluded home of them, going days without seeing any other member of the crew and often weeks or months between catching the notice of the captain. Years passed and their encounters were less and less frequent, though when they did occur they were increasingly violent.

By 1 BBY, the smugglers had become ruthless pirates, and a now fully grown Cerberus was finding the mechanical shafts of the ship to be somewhat less spacious than they once were. In an operation gone wrong, the pirate's ship became heavily damaged along The Death Wind Corridor hyperspace route and went dormant, waiting for a chance at recovery. While the ship drifted in space, conserving power, the life support systems began to fail and the crew drifted into sleep. Cerberus, by far the smallest member of the crew, was the last to remain conscious and took the opportunity for revenge and murdered the pirates in their sleep.

A scavenger picked up the ship for scrap several days later, selling it to a nearby orbital junkyard around Hypori run by a lone Ithorian engineer named Urik, and his fleet of droids. Cerberus went unnoticed by the scavengers, and the engineers initial scans, and the ship was added to the junk heap. Untrustworthy of his location and stranger, Cerberus remained hidden aboard the ship, living off what he could scavenge for himself. Eventually he started repairing the ship from scrap in the junkyard, inevitably Urik noticed this as well, but allowed it to play out patiently. He even fostered Cerberus' repairs, until eventually the two met, and though Cerberus was highly untrusting at first, Urik was patient and slowly earned his trust. An odd sort of friendship formed between two while Cerberus repaired the ship, and eventually when the ship was repaired, Cerberus didn't stray too far and started taking odd jobs around Hypori and the surrounding systems.

In 3 ABY The Zann Consortium and Jabba The Hutt both made a play for Hypori and the droid manufacturing facilities still in operation, the resulting battle forced Urik and Cerberus to abandon Hypori or risk being caught up between the two sides. They met up with an Alliance Commander named Randyl Khan, who Urik had known for many years, in Bothan Space. They remained with The Alliance fleet for a short while, before Urik decided to return to Ithor and descend to the surface for the rest of his life. Cerberus on the other hand, took Urik's advice and put his trust in Commander Khan who had assembled a crew of fringers in need of a ship. The crew joined Cerberus aboard his ship, and their primary objective was to run support missions for various alliance cells operating around the galaxy. The crew soon learned that support missions for The Alliance didn't pay too well, and instead went rogue becoming pirates along the outer rim.

The new crew of the ship never liked having Cerberus on board, their crew went way back, and they considered him an outsider and assumed his species meant that he was stupid. They often ridiculed Cerberus for his life spent aboard the ship, the leader of the group is the one who dubbed it The Dirge of Cerberus, and certainly meant for there to be no affection in the title. Constantly at odds over the ship already, once the crew went pirate Cerberus' patience was short, and once again he resorted to fiercely, and ruthlessly murdering the pirates in their sleep. Cerberus made contact with Commander Khan and reunited with his fleet near Mon Calamari, now after the Battle of Endor, explaining what had transpired in the time since the ship had lost contact with The Alliance.

It was some time before either Cerberus or Khan was willing to make a new, long term arrangement but eventually it became too impractical to have a ship and a skilled pilot not in use, Khan put a new group together and sent them out into The Galaxy aboard The Dirge of Cerberus, hoping for better results than last time.
