BACKGROUND
Born on the Defel home world of Af'El, a distant and secluded outer rim planet, like most of his species Cerberus began working in the Meleenium mines at a young age. The Defel species lived underground to escape the harsh conditions of their planet, deeper into the planet's depths were the only naturally occurring meleenium stock piles in the galaxy, which was a necessary mineral used in Durasteel construction. The Defel had never developed hyperspace capability, which meant they were incapable of trading this incredibly valuable resource without a visit from outsiders. As a result the corporation Vulca Minerals made a yearly trip to Af'El, procuring a yearly supply of the valuable resource in exchange for fresh foodstuffs. Occasionally, ambitious independent traders would brave the high-gravity planet to trade with The Defel and break Vulca Minderal's meleenium monopoly.
In 6 BBY, one such ship arrived on Af'El to trade meleenium, as successful, arrogant smugglers who were primarily under the employee of Black Sun Crime Syndicate and looked down upon the Defel during their interactions. Not only did they take advantage of The Defel, but they fancied the smaller creatures pets more than peers. The captain of the vessel was vain beyond measure, and decided to take not only their minerals, but one of the adolescent Defel who worked in the refinery. Cerberus was kidnapped at a young age, taken to be a pet aboard the smuggler's vessel.
Aboard the smuggling vessel, the captain quickly grew bored of his new pet, as he lost interest he grew cruel and abusive. The rest of the crew was no help, though most lacked the same cruelty as the captain, they were mostly amused or at best apathetic. Cerberus learned over time to remain out of sight and mind, his natural curiosity and mechanical aptitude kept him entertained in the bowels of he ship, where the captain rarely visited. The narrow, warm ducts and chutes in the mechanical shafts of the ship reminded Cerberus of the underground tunnels of Af'El and he made a secluded home of them, going days without seeing any other member of the crew and often weeks or months between catching the notice of the captain. Years passed and their encounters were less and less frequent, though when they did occur they were increasingly violent.
By 1 BBY, the smugglers had become ruthless pirates, and a now fully grown Cerberus was finding the mechanical shafts of the ship to be somewhat less spacious than they once were. In an operation gone wrong, the pirate's ship became heavily damaged along The Death Wind Corridor hyperspace route and went dormant, waiting for a chance at recovery. While the ship drifted in space, conserving power, the life support systems began to fail and the crew drifted into sleep. Cerberus, by far the smallest member of the crew, was the last to remain conscious and took the opportunity for revenge and murdered the pirates in their sleep.
