For as long as Magnar can remember, he has been a warden of the state. He bounced between foster homes, boarding schools, orphanages, and juvie until he aged out of the system at 18. Magnar was labeled as a trouble maker at a young age, and it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once you were surrounded by bad kids and guardians looking for you to cause trouble, it was impossible to get away clean. All considering, however, he got away pretty clean.
Magnar was always one of the biggest strongest kids around. Kids would occasionlly pick a fight with him to prove how tough they were, but for the most part, he was left alone. Magnar was also a quiet child with a sharp mind and was always watching everything around him. He got along with the other kids well enough but rarely went out of his way to make friends. The friends he did make were often like him, quiet and looking to avoid trouble.
Magnar was an average student. He could have done better but was usually preoccupied with were his next meal was going to come from, if his new foster parents abused their foster kids, or which way home would avoid the gangs. He did neither good or bad enough to garner any attention for his academics. Magnar was too large to avoid the notice of coaches at the school, however. He ended up playing as a linebacker on the football team and a wrestler. Magnar could have probably landed a scholorship to play one of the sports at a small or medium sized school, but fate had other plans for him.
When he was 17, one of the younger kids that Magnar had become friends with had disappeared. There was a half hearted search for him, but he wasnt the kind of kid the police wasted their resources on. It was announced that he had probably run away, and the investigation was closed. Magnar felt that something was wrong, so he did a little investigating of his own. He had heard the boy saying that he had met a man that was talking about adopting him, but it wasnt through any of the official channels.
Magnar watched the man for a few days and was sure that something was amiss. After the man left his house one afternoon, Magnar picked the lock and snuck in. Inside he discovered 100s of pictures of his friend and other young boys. Additionally, there was evidence that suggested that the man did more than just watch the boys, including a bag full of bloody clothes. Magnar found his friends t-shirt and shoes in there and was certain that he had killed the boy.
Magnar put everything back the way he found it, found a large knife in the kitchen, and hid in the man's room. The man came home a little after dark but did not go to bed until late. Magnar remained patient, however. He waited for almost an hour after the man had gone to bed before he slipped out of his hiding place in the bedroom. He moved quickly and silently to the man's side and slit his throat in one smooth stroke. The man tried to reach for something in his bedstand drawer, but Magnar held him down until he stopped breathing and twitching.
Magnar threw the knife to the side and looked in the drawer were a silenced pistol was lying. Even so close, it had done him no good. Magnar tucked the pistol in his pants and slipped out of the house. He head back to his foster parents' house and snuck in through a window he and the other boys kept unlocked. A few days later the murder was in the news, as were the things found in the house.
Magnar was not surprised when the police showed up at the house and asked for him. His fingerprints were on file, and he had touched plenty of things in the house. The officer that had come to arrest him has a large man with an eye patch. Magnar didnt resist when the man handcuffed him and put him in the back of the cruiser. It was only one man and Magnar was nearly as large, but something told him that this man was not someone to be trifled with.
The man took him straight to an interrogation room. Normally you would stop at booking first. The man told him to take a seat and then sat down on the other side of the table. Normally they made you wait before they would talk to you. Magnar sat down and just stared at the man, the man just stared back.
"Not a bad job. No sign of breaking and entering, little sign of a struggle. You didn't leave any DNA evidence or anything like. Of course you are probably twice his size, and he was asleep, so its not like he had a chance to defend himself. You left fingerprints everywhere though. That was a dumb move." The man seemed rather unconcerned with what had been done and more worried about how well Magnar had done it. "I suppose if you had worn gloves though, I would never have found you and made the connection. I have been looking for you for a long time, about 17 years now I figure. You see, son, I am your father."
Magnar stared at him. This had to be the dumbest police tactic he had ever seen.
The officer waited for him to react, but Magnar never moved. "Fair enough. I suppose I wouldnt believe me either if I was you. The story will only get more bizarre though. You see... I am Odin, The All-Father... of the Norse Gods that is. Your mother was stolen from me by titan spawn before your birth, and I have been looking for you ever since. They killed her, the poor girl, but it was clear that you had already been born when they did. I have been looking for you ever since."
What was the plan here? Something so stupid that it would disarm him. Magnar just sat and stared at the police officer.
"I suppose I can't expect you to believe me. I guess I will have to show you." The police officer got up and open the door out of the room. "Come on." The police officer lead Magnar back into a police car and started to drive away from the police station.
Magnar's mind was racing. What the hell was wrong with this guy? Telling him a stupid story, not booking him, arresting him alone, taking him for a drive... None of it made sense.
They pulled up in front of a house Magnar knew immediately. It was the house he killed the guy in. It was still surrounded by police tape, but there was no longer an officer standing outside. The police officer grabbed a bag and got out. Then he opened the door for Magnar and told him to hurry up. He pulled down the tape and unlocked the door. He went in with Magnar following behind him, still in handcuffs. He led Magnar to the bedroom and uncuffed him once inside.
"I think this might convince you." The police officer pulled an axe out of the bag and Magnar jumped back.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" cursed Magnar. The axe had a long wooden handle of some black wood and looked like something a Viking would use.
"Oh don't be a bitch." The police officer extended the handle to Magnar and waited for him to take it. Magnar reached out and took it. It was heavy, but he could easily handle it with his strength. Magnar heard a voice, just on the edge of his hearing. It sounded familiar. He strained to listen but heard it no better.
The police officer was watching him intently, "Plant it in the ground over there." He nodded toward the bed frame, the rest had probably been taken to evidence. Looking back, Magnar would not be able to tell you why he did as commanded, but he did. He stepped over next to the empty bed frame and raised the axe high above his head. Luckily the room had vaulted ceilings and gave him plenty of space. He pulled down on the axe with all his strength and planted it in the carpet in the middle of where the mattress had been. The axe split the carpet and sunk deep into the flooring beneath with a deep thud. Then Magnar took a step back.
The light in the room dimmed to dusk even though it was afternoon outside and nothing covered the windows and a white mist swirled out of where the axe cracked the floor and began to coalesce into a human form. Magnar watched suspicously as the mist took the form of his friend that had been killed in this very house. "Kenny?" Magnar asked quietly.
"Magnar? Is that you? What happened? Where am I? The way forward is blocked. I am scared Magnar."
Magnar reached forward and tried to touch his friend, but he was only mist in the air. Magnar whipped his head around towards the police officer. "What the hell is this? Is this some kind of joke?" Magnar clenched his teeth and threw a punch at the police officer.
The cop caught Magnar's fist in his hand. "Is this how you treat your father, boy?" The cop put his other hand around Magnar's neck and threw him across the room like a rag doll. Magnar crashed through the drywall with a crunch and was unconcious before he slumped to the ground.
When Magnar's eyes opened it was dark, but he could tell he was still in the house. His back burned and ached where it had hit the wall. The police officer was gone and the only sign of what happened earlier was a gash in the floor and cracked and the cracked and broken wall Magnar had been thrown into. Magnar got to his feet gingerly and managed to limp from the house. He wasnt sure why he hadnt been taken back to the jail, but he wasnt in any hurry to find out. He wasnt sure if he remembered the events of that afternoon correctly either. He managed to make it to a nearby empty lot with a privacy fence around it. Usually there were homeless people, addicts, or girls working here, but it had been raining, and they must have found a drier place to stay because it was empty. He slipped through the hole in the fence and found a place out of sight to lie down.
Magnar woke to the sounds of snarling. He jerked awake but managed to stay still after that and listened. Whatever they were, they were close but not right on top of him. He dared a peek out of his hiding spot to see into the rest of the abandoned lot. No more than 30 yards away was a wolf the size of a horse with another two 10 yards behind it. The closest one's eyes met his only a moment after he saw it. The shrubbery he had been sleeping behind would offer no protection, so he jumped to his feet and dashed for the hole in the fence that was his only means of escape. The beast took off to block his path, and it was clear that Magnar was never going to make it. A moment before the monster was going to crash into Magnar. The point of a spear appeared through the hole and a lightning bolt jumped from it and crashed into the beast. The giant wolf went flying and landed 10 feet away. It's flank was burned black and bleeding profusely where it had been hit.
The police officer from earlier stepped through the hole in the fence and was holding a spear in his right hand and an axe in his left. "I imagine you will listen to what I have to say know, wont you, boy?" Odin fired another bolt at the two remaining creatures, but they darted to opposite sides and started coming at them in a pincher move. Odin handed the axe to Magnar, the same axe as before, and said, "You best learn to tap your powers or you will not survive long. Fate has not destined restful lives for our kind. Now fight! And show me what kind of son I have."
Magnar turned his back to his father as the giant wolf was almost to him. Magnar gripped the axe like a baseball bat and swung it with all his might. The wolf easily leapt back in time to avoid the strike, which left Magnar off balance. The wolf pounced right after the blade passed by its nose. Luckily, Magnar managed to pull out of his failed attack and bring the shaft of the axe up in front of the wolf's jaws. The beast bit down, but the shaft of the axe held. The two fought over the weapon, and when they both twisted to one side, they went rolling through the dirt. The two wrestled on the ground for the axe and for position. Magnar was faster and stronger than he had ever been before, but he was still losing ground to the beast. Eventually, the wolf pinned Magnar under one of its giant paws and pulled the axe up and out of Magnar's hands. With nothing left to hold back the monsterous jaw of the giant wolf, he was defeated. Then, as hope was draining from him, he saw a spear sliding into the wolf's throat under its uplifted head. The beast shuddered and fell off of Magnar, dead.
Odin helped Magnar to his feet and returned the axe to his son's hand. "You have a long way to go, but you did as well as a young scion could hope against a fenris. They are one of our many enemies, and we must work together if we are to defeat them and delay Ragnarok."
