Background

In ages long past, Boko was the terrible monkey-king of an ancient tribe that inhabited the area near present-day Thorns. He ruled beastman and human alike with an iron fist, intolerant of weakness and insubordination. In Boko's age, the strongest warrior held the throne, and it was rare the day Boko would refuse a duel. Even rarer was the day he'd lose one. After nearly a century of enjoying the worship of dedicated followers, the Lunar Exalted deemed him an affront to the dignity of creatures under Luna's light, and slew him. Even in death, Boko became a ghostly scourge, terrorizing the lower souls of the dead and forcing them to arise as hungry ghosts. Many years later, a Lunar necromancer saw fit to put an end to Boko's deathly rampage, sealing his form into that of a weaker capuchin monkey. Boko stayed this way for many decades, until the Mask of Winters took Thorns. At this point, the Deathlord saw fit to enslave Boko and unleash his power as one of the Mask's many terrible beasts. Strangely, Boko retained the ability to shift into his smaller form. The Mask of Winters employed Boko often as a spy -- as a capuchin monkey, he appeared harmless, and could easily sneak into guarded and enclosed areas. If caught, however, he was more than capable of defending himself. Boko resented the Mask and loathed his craven, dishonorable rulership. When a Deathknight whom he frequently aided, Whispers from Beyond went rogue, Boko bound himself to the Abyssal and used this intimacy as a chance to escape the Mask's rule. The two left together, and though Boko someday hopes to again rule a tribe of beastmen as he once did, he is content for now aiding his Exalted master, feeling his quest to escape the Mask of Winters a task worth assisting.
