Notes From His Recruiter: “Castor has a lot of aptitude that makes him an appealing recruit. He is the product of an extremely harsh upbringing that he is lucky to have survived, frankly I don’t know many people who would in the same conditions. The severity of his upbringing will either need to be harnessed or overcome; he joins the Rebellion as a blunt, albeit effective, tool. Raw and unrefined. The potential is there, the right commander could turn him into an incredibly valuable agent. Another might make him a hammer to bang into the anvil that is The Empire until one of the two shatters.” - Commander Silus Endeel
Castor: Character Sheet

BACKGROUND

Castor was born to a full blooded Zabrack Nightbrother and a Dathomirian Nightsister on the planet Dathomir. Despite being the child of a Zabrack and a Dathomirian hybrid he was genetically a Zabrack, the only trait he inherited from his mother is his chalk white skin. As a male child of The Nightbrothers, his only options in life were a life of servitude or almost certain death. Before his first birthday his mother made that choice for him. Shortly after marking Castor’s face and body with jet black tattoos, his mother chose death by selling him to slavers from Rattataka.

The Rattataki were infamously harsh masters, a society secluded from the rest of the galaxy that was known for pitting hapless slaves against trained combatants in a variety of gladiatorial arenas. They bought slaves to die on the dirt floors of coliseums while crowds cheered and the bookies collected bets. It was a safe assumption that he’d been dealt a death sentence at an unreasonably young age.

Too young to provide the cruel Rattataki an entertaining death, or perhaps simply a profitable one, Castor was raised among the slaves of the planet performing often mindless manual labor. The slave population on the harsh, isolated world was rather significant as the cheap labor made it easier to compensate for their relative lack of natural resources; additionally keeping enough slaves to breed more, rather than purchase more was a cost effective investment. Castor was raised among a community of slaves that was dominated by women and children, the men didn’t live long once they reached fighting age…

As a child in this community Castor learned quickly that he was unusual, that he viewed his captivity different than most of the lifeless husks that surrounded him. The women who had seen so many men go off and die bloody deaths had lost any spark of life they once had, most of the children picked up on this mentality soon enough. It hung over the slave population and inherently suppressed it. Few individuals had the awareness to see it, and fewer still the willpower to resist it. Combined with the fact that Rattataka provided no escape, it’s environment and apex predators would kill an escapee before the next sunrise, the Rattataki actually had to provide minimal supervision to the population, which allowed certain freedoms to those willing to exercise them.

As a pre-teen Castor was “adopted” by a group of older boys who had long had the run of the slave community. Bigger, stronger, smarter than most of the population they excelled in their day-to-day life and the limited training the Rattataki provided to turn the slaves into suitable fodder in their arenas of death. Compared to most they lived as kings, at least they thought they did. One in particular took Castor under his wing, showed him the basics of fighting, though they were forbidden to train outside of sanctioned sessions, and took care of him. Castor came to look up to him as a brother, and started to enjoy the life they were able to make at the top of the slave community.

One day that all changed. Early one morning all of slaves of his community were rounded up and taken into the stands of one of the largest coliseums on the planet. The only ones who were absent were the older boys who had risen to the top of the population… They were in the center of the arena. The Rattataki released an angry herd of Rancors into the pit with the unarmed boys, who never stood a chance. The Rancor beat, battered, and broke the boys in a bloody massacre before devouring their flesh in front of the entire community. Watching the only person Castor had ever shared a personal connection with be devoured by a savage beast for no reason other than being noticed changed Castor’s perspective forever.

Castor spent what was left of his adolescence blending into the crowd, careful not to be noticed for performing well or poorly. This was a somewhat solitary existence, however it was preferable to the alternative, even if he was only biding his time. He was in his late teens before he was forced into the arena for the first time, later than most, and he was lucky to survive it. His second visit to the area would alter his destiny forever.

Two ‘armies’ of slaves squared off in battle against one another, which turned into an especially heated affair, as the slaves realized for once that the victorious were guaranteed survival for at least one more day. The side that Castor fought for eventually proved the survivor of the battle, but there was another twist at the coliseum that afternoon. Unknown to the participants of the battle, the victorious team had their ownership transferred to a particularly wealthy smuggler, Alluria Sand.

Alluria Sand had a reputation in the outer rim territories as one of the best smuggler pilots in space, her reputation kept her safe and made her rich. That she could back up the claim only led to more profits. Independent of all major crime syndicates she kept her wealth away from most and made her den in Smugglers Run, a well hidden lair in an asteroid field. The shrewd smuggler had credits to risk, and wasn’t shy about taking a good bet, admittedly she didn’t have a purpose in mind when she acquired the slaves.

Castor, like most of the slaves considered it to be a stroke of good fortune, undoubtedly their chances of survival had risen and they did not believe a smuggler would be near as cruel as their Rattataki masters. At the very least getting off planet increased the chance of escape. They would be collectively disappointed on the last point at least. The partially hollowed out asteroid in Smuggler’s Run proved to be no less secure a prison; however, Alluria was far less cruel. She put the slaves to work doing manual labor and acting occasionally as muscle in her smuggling operation. It was droid work, but better than the pits of Rattatak. Castor knew it would be a temporary arrangement and remained prepared to move on, the end came even sooner than he’d anticipated.

The Battle of Yavin took place only a few months after the transfer of ownership, sending ripples throughout the galaxy. Alluria had never taken a side in the conflict, but did business with The Rebels with far greater frequency than she did with The Imperials. Though the Rebels weren’t in a position to make any kind of demands, they clearly had a fundamental disagreement with slavery and Alluria came across a deal she couldn’t pass up. Commander Silus Endeel was the point of contact for Alluria on Ryloth, where her work with the rebels typically originated. Commander Endeel knew of Alluria’s slave crew and made her an offer, instead of trying to buy their freedom he made a deal to take any slaves who were willing into the ranks of The Rebellion, in exchange Alluria would be the sole commissioned smuggler for operations in the area.

It was an easy choice for Castor, and many of his fellow slaves did the same. Commander Endeel kept them on Ryloth while he contacted Rebel Command and questioned them to learn more about each of them, a process which Castor assumed was for both of their benefit. The former slaves were sent to various ends of the galaxy to larger bases of operation to receive more formal training before they could be trusted to join the fight against the Empire. Castor was sent towards the Core to receive his training, where he met Handler Nine and Faleer.
